Statement by the spokesperson of the High Representative Catherine Ashton
on the attack on UNAMID peacekeepers in Darfur

THE spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:
“The High Representative strongly condemns yesterday’s attack on UAMID in Darfur, which left 7
Tanzanian peacekeepers dead and 17 others wounded.
She extends her deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, to the Government of Tanzania and to all UAMID personnel. The High Representative calls on the Government of Sudan to take rapid action to hold the perpetrators accountable and bring them to justice.

She is deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation in Darfur. This latest attack on UAMID, the third in three weeks, underlines the need to revitalise efforts to achieve a comprehensive and inclusive peace in Darfur and across Sudan. The EU fully supports the continuing efforts of Joint AU-U Special Representative for Darfur/Head of UAMID Chambas to achieve this.”
