A Shout Out to Teens: Wear a Seatbelt to Enjoy Secure Driving!

A Shout Out to Teens Wear a Seatbelt to Enjoy Secure Driving.
THE simple act of wearing a seatbelt can prevent some of the most fatal risks that one faces on road. In fact, studies have suggested that wearing a seatbelt can enhance your experience of driving as you feel more secure behind the wheel. Carmudi, Tanzania’s leading online vehicle marketplace, advocates the use of seatbelt especially among teens as they are the most vulnerable demographic on Tanzanian roads.
By simply encouraging the use of seatbelt or self-policing your near and dear ones, you can bring a significant difference to not just road etiquette, but also road security. It is estimated that seatbelts can reduce the risk of fatal injury to passengers in the front seat by 45 percent and moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent.
An observational survey by Carmudi has shown that seat belt usage among teens is significantly low compared with other age groups. Grassroots efforts in the community should be joined with mass media and broad-based messaging outreach to immerse parents and caregivers, teachers, health professionals and others with reminders for the importance of wearing seat belt, and safe driving. Carmudi continues its research to find measures for tackling issues around drink driving, texting while driving, poor mechanical conditions and lack of basic training. The intention is to share this with the public in the near future.
“Supporting young people to learn to drive and to be law abiding motorists takes a community effort,” comments William Day, Carmudi East Africa Managing Director. As Carmudi works towards increasing education and awareness for the importance of wearing seat belts, those on the roadways aim to involve young and new drivers in the participation and importance of safe driving.
There is a critical need for more research and education within Tanzania for the country to successfully respond to the pressing issue of crash-related incidents. While recognizing the unique and cultural characteristics of young drivers within the Tanzania context, Carmudi Tanzania believes that valuable lessons can be learnt from international research; this would provide useful insights and strategies that could be quickly assimilated, adopted and implemented in the current driving environment.
“Carmudi intends to educate young drivers about the importance of seat belt use through social media, blogs, and other information outlets where youngsters have quite an active presence and are receptive to new messages,” adds William Day.
