East Africa’s hip-hop legend, Joseph Mbilinyi (Sugu) alais Mr II was sworn-in in Dodoma ushering a life as Member of Parliament and at the same time carrying the banner of Bongo Flava in the august house.
The Hip-hop legendry is from the Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) who defeated his greatest opponent
This took place after he defeated CCM candidate Benson Mpesya in hotly contested elections in Mbeya urban constituency during genera elections.
He garnered 46,411 votes as against 24,236 by his opponent.
Sugu’s legendary talent is set to move to the parliament with Hip Hop revolutionary having a culture of being hard working, commitment, focused a man of the people.
Some remember him as 2 proud back in the early 90’s. Others still call him Mr 2 or Mr II, but SUGU is now the new name of this legend, a voice of the voiceless who has never been afraid to speak out when he sees a wrong is done.
His style is best described as lyrical, soulful, rhythmical and straight from the heart. His tight and articulate Swahili flow is remarkable and the manner in which he handles a multitude of subject matters is engaging even to those who may not understand his Swahili narratives, his fans say.
With various attached accolades and now eight domestically acclaimed albums already to his name, he is synonymous with East African Hip-hop and widely accredited to really motivating the Hip hop scene in Tanzania and popularizing the phrase ‘Bongo Flava’ an endearing name given to local urban music of Tanzanian origin.
According to music artist Selemani Msindi ‘Afande Sele’ who says and believes that the Member of Parliament Honorable is the one who will bring change of the long dieing Tanzania local Music that has for long benefited pirates more.
“Pirates have led us to poor standards of performances, unrecognized and not acknowledged within the society. This problem can be successfully eliminated having the support from the newly elected Member of Parliament who knows what problems Tanzanian musicians face having being in the game for long with more than eight album launch,” Sele added.
